A brave young girl battling epilepsy in the U.S has made massive improvements using medicinal marijuana.

Three-year-old toddler Addyson Benton was suffering 100 seizures every day and her parents travelled 1,200 miles in order to seek help for their child.

Addyson was diagnosed with Intractable Myoclonic Epilepsy when she was just nine months old and, although doctors tried 10 types of medication, nothing was a success.

In response, Heather and Adam Benton made the decision to relocate from Ohio to Colorado where marijuana is legal.

Adysson was prescribed an oil derivative of marijuana which is low in THC, the chemical that produces the high.

Within just six hours of being treated with the oil, Adysson’s parents noticed significant improvements and her seizures eventually dropped to only three a day.

It cost the family $10,000 (£6,500) to relocate but the cost was clearly worth it.

Heather Benton said:

We were blown away. She was walking with ease and communicating – we are so excited for her future. We could have lost our daughter, we thought we were never going to find anything that would work for her and we just felt empty. It’s been difficult leaving family and friends. It was tough to say goodbye but it’s been worth it seeing the success.

It’s not just for people to abuse. Anyone that saw my daughter a year ago couldn’t deny how well it’s worked. We aren’t the typical people to try this sort of thing. My husband is a marine veteran and works in health care, but it’s opened my heart to medicinal marijuana. It breaks my heart for the kids that might not be able to get the treatment. There are so many families out there that can’t afford to move. We are really lucky. I know a lot aren’t going to make it.

Campaigners for the legalisation of marijuana have touted the health benefits of the drug for years and recently the U.S Government confirmed that cannabis kills cancer cells.
